This de-icer is designed to float in the water tank and is thermostatically controlled with an automatic shut-off. The styrofoam float is completely enclosed within a rugged plastic housing. The cord exits from the top of the unit. This gives the heater added stability and it is less likely to tip the tank. 1000 watts, 120 volts with 6-foot cord for use in ponds.

Does the job:
I bought this item since I lost half my fish in my pond last year when it froze completely over. Here it is mid-February and the pond has not frozen over yet, nor have I seen any dead fish. I wish I had bought this sooner.

Pond and goldfish maintained in sub-zero temperatures:
I've been using this product all winter, and we just came out of two of the coldest days I've seen in a long time here. Temperatures were below zero with wind chills in the -20's (degrees F). My garden pond is still around 45 degrees, goldfish slow but still kicking, and pump still circulating, even though the pond is surrounded by snow and ice. Amazing.
